Small car owners in this capital city are feeling the heat of car driving in hassle free environment as frequent checking of vehicle documents have put brakes on their movement with families or during peak office hours.

This paper verification drive, as per the owners, is confined to small cars owned by middle class families while others vehicles which are ‘nightmare’ for commuters or passengers and create traffic hassles in the city are not touched or verified.

“On Sunday around 10.15 am, I was stopped first by traffic policemen at Sonwar market and as per their directive I showed them all the documents pertaining to the vehicle. It took me about half an hour to wait for the turn and later to satisfy them that I am the real owner of the car and with the family to move around on Sunday, I was unnecessarily harassed for having the four-wheeler,” said Abdul Rashid, a commuter.

As per the owners, just two hundred meters away from Sonwar market where traffic policemen and officials were stopping small cars only, Jammu and Kashmir police had put another naka at Ram Munshi Bagh crossing where J&K policemen were demanding another round of verification of papers.

“Hardly moving ahead from Sonwar, J&K policemen stopped me again and asked for the documents and here the policeman directed me to go to his sahib (officer), some yards away to show the papers.  This is humiliating for the owner and similar queries and checking and the subsequent argument push the Sunday mood to brink,” said Rashid, a resident of Batwara.

As per Rashid and other owners, they argued with the police official about constant harassment for owning a car to which the official replied that they have been directed by their higher ups.

When contacted, concerned police officials were not available for comment on the frequent document checking of small car owners.
