In a bid to prevent traffic jams  due to wrong parking, authorities are mulling to set up 28 on-road notified parking places in the summer capital.

In this regard, Srinagar Development Authority has set-up a parking near Sangarmal Complex as paid parking facility. The rates fixed by SDA at the new parking for Light Motor Vehicles is Rs 20 per entry, for motorcycle and scooty parking cost is Rs 10 per entry and for commercial vehicles parking charges is Rs. 50 per entry.

Vice-Chairman SDA, Abdul Majid Raina said that the new parking near Sangarmal Complex will be opened for public on Saturday.

“This was a vacant plot which we are now utilizing for a parking place. It can accommodate over 200 vehicles. Depending on the response, we will plan for further development of this parking space,” Raina said.

Commissioner, Srinagar Municipal Corporation, Riyaz Ahmad Wani said SMC and Traffic Police are jointly identifying on-road parking places and all these slots will be ready in next few weeks. “5-10 on-road parking places will be started in next 2-3 days and based on the response we will extend it to other areas as well. Our first preference is to set-up parking facilities in the city centre and then implement this idea to rest of the areas,” Wani said.

“This will be a parallel parking instead of a perpendicular parking which occupies less space and will save road width to a great extent. Parking charges will be per half an hour and it will encourage more people to park at these notified parking places,” Wani said.

To press for more parking slots and better traffic management, representatives of various business and trade unions recently met SSP Traffic Srinagar Tahir Saleem Khan.

Nasir Hamid Khan, senior vice-president, Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry, who chaired the meeting said apart from providing parking facilities, traffic police should stop practice of deflating tyres of wrongly parked vehicles “as it infringed upon the rights of the public and put them to severe inconvenience,”.  “It was also suggested that female drivers needed to be extended a degree of relaxation and, if possible, their checking/challaning should be done only by female officers not below the rank of Dy SP’s,” Khan said.

Sheikh Usman Fazal, representatives of the Hari Singh High Street Traders Association said presence of vendors in the area “is hampering smooth movement of traffic and encroaches upon the parking facilities for the customers”.

The Polo View Association and the Lambert Lane Association also informed the SSP Traffic that available plots in their respective areas could be converted into parking areas.
