Hot water pipe burst at SMHS Hospital causes panic

Patients admitted at ward 6 of SMHS Hospital here had a narrow escape on Wednesday when a central heating pipe running through the ward burst splashing scalding water over the people present there.

Early morning on Wednesday, while most patients at SMHS Hospital were asleep, the central heating pipe that runs through the hospital wards burst in ward 6. The leak in the pipe that carries hot water and steam resulting in hot water splashing in all directions, as per witnesses. 

“I was attending to my mother and helping her get up when I heard a loud burst and suddenly there was hot water all over the floor,” a man identifying himself as Irshad Ahmed said. He said his mother was admitted at the hospital for a cardiac ailment and the incident caused her to panic.

Another patient, who wished not to be named, said that although he was sick, he had to leave his bed due to water spoiling all bedding and putting lives of patients in danger.

Patients and their attendants alleged that the hospital administration did not respond to the situation immediately. “It took us 15 minutes to figure out where we had to report the matter to. And then they (central heating division) did not turn up immediately,” said Muhammad Shaban, an attendant of a patient.

For long, stakeholders have expressed concern over the lack of safety measures in Kashmir hospitals, putting patient lives at risk.

In-charge medical superintendent SMHS Hospital, Dr Saleem Tak acknowledged that the water pipe had burst accidently but blamed it on attendants. 

“Some attendants were sitting on central heating unit in the ward causing it to break due to load,” he said. He denied the allegations of delay in repair and said that the leak had been plugged immediately.
