Crumbling embankment at Shivpora locality here on Tuesday created panic among locals. 

The locals fear that the embankment can breach in case water level rises in Jhelum and accused the authorities of failing to undertake timely repairs. 

“This problem persists from past several years. We have apprised concerned authorities about it repeatedly and they assured to repair it. But our pleas have fallen on deaf ears,” said Muhammad Abbas, a local while pointing towards to damaged portion of bund. He added that the embankment has developed cracks at several places. “If  repairs are delayed, it will prove a disaster for city. The embankment was damaged in 2014 floods and since then the authorities have failed to act,” he said.

“Government must probe as why the process of repairing was delayed,” said Ghulam Muhammad, a local. 

The locals demand immediate repairing of damaged embankment and urged higher ups to fix responsibility for the negligence of duty by officials. “The failure of the state government to strengthen the weak embankments of Jhelum river and increase its height at low lying places haunts the people when it rains,” said Ghulam Nabi of Sonwar.

Similarly, people alleged that the breaches at Batwara, Shivpora and other adjacent places have also been repaired without applying any technical expertise. “All these breaches have been filled up for the sake of it. No official bothered to ensure their filling as per laid down norms,” said Ghulam Qadir, a local at Athwajan.

Assistant executive engineer sub-division division GR Shah said that he would  visit the spot at Shivpora. “I will make assessment of damage and  decide the course of action,” he said.
