In run-up to Eid-ul-Adha, a special team constituted by deputy commissioner Srinagar, Dr Syed Abid Rasheed, Saturday undertook a market-checking drive at various areas in the district to verify the price and quality of eatables.

The special team, which was headed by assistant commissioner Srinagar, Peerzada Zahoor Ahmad and comprising officers from Health, Food Safety and SMC, inspected different kinds of stores on the occasion and verified the approved prices and quality of eatables offered there, an official spokesperson said. 

Besides city centre markets and various other civil lines areas including Rambagh, Chanapora and Baghat, the team also visited various Downtown areas including Nowhatta, Eidgah, Nawa Bazar, Safa Kadal, Fateh Kadal and Rajouri Kadal. 

The team fined several violators for resorting to excessive pricing on the occasion, realising Rs 26,500 as fine. Those fined on the occasion include major bakery shops located in the city centre who were found falling short in terms of either mandatory displaying of rate-lists or adherence to kitchen hygiene norms.

Four dealers of sacrificial animals were also arrested for excessive pricing during an inspection of its market at Eidgah Park. Strict instructions were issued to all kinds of meat sellers and sellers dealing with sacrificial animals being directed to ensure strict adherence to approved rates.

Pertinently, approved rates for Qurbani livestock include Rs 210 per kilogram for Delhi Walla and Merino Cross sheep, 200 per rupees kilogram for Bakarwal and Kashmiri local sheep, and 190 rupees per kilogram for goat respectively. “The general public is requested to contact the following phone numbers  in the event of any complaint with regard to black marketing/ excessive rates or profiteering  n district Srinagar Helpline 7051112345 and Operator to DC Srinagar at 919419042342,” an official statement said.
