A massive protest stalled traffic on the Jammu-Rajouri-Poonch highway near Nowshera Tain bridge for over three hours on Friday after a man from Jhanger in Nowshera was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Gandhi Nagar, Jammu on Thursday evening.

The protesters, including family members, relatives and locals, alleged that the man has been “murdered for being a whistleblower in a multi-crore scam” regarding compensation of land located along LoC in the Jhanger Saryah area.

As per reports, Pappu Chowdhary, son of Shanker Dass and a resident of Jhanger in Nowshera, was an auto-rickshaw driver in Jammu and he was found lying dead under mysterious circumstances in Gole Market area in Gandhi Nagar of Jammu on Thursday evening.

On Friday, at about 2 pm, the body of the deceased reached Nowshera and his family members and relatives kept the body on the highway at Nowshera bridge and blocked it for traffic. They raised slogans against government authorities.

“Pappu has been murdered under a well hatched conspiracy and some influential people from Nowshera town are involved in the crime,” the family members alleged, adding, “The deceased and his elder brother, CR Choudhary, are whistleblowers in a multi-crore scam, in which some local people, in association with revenue officers, managed to draw compensation of land, which is actually in PoK. They managed to prepare fake records of land, showing it inside the Indian side of the LoC fence and withdrew compensation worth crores.”

"Where are the anti-corruption bodies?" the wife of deceased questioned, saying, “Since years, anti-corruption bodies have been conducting a probe in the matter, but have failed to come up with something concrete.”

The agitating family members claimed that the man was murdered only because he played the role of whistleblower. "Our family was receiving threats since long and the people involved in the scam murdered Pappu to silence his voice," they said.

Initially, Tehsildar Nowshera along with SDPO Nowshera and SHO Nowshera tried to pacify the protesters, but failed.

After about three hours, Additional DC Rajouri Thakur Sher Singh reached the spot along with AdSP Nowshera Master Popsy and interacted with the people. They assured that administration has contacted Jammu unit of Jammu and Kashmir police and have asked for a fair and speedy probe, as the incident took place in Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. On these assurances, the protest was called off.

A financial aid of Rs 25,000 was also announced for the victim's family.
