Two army soldiers were injured in an incident of firing and a sniping attack along the Line of Control in Rajouri and Poonch districts of Jammu province on Tuesday, officials said.

An official source said that shelling by Pakistani army targeting an army establishment near Poonch town triggered panic in the area.

“At around 7.20am, two shells fired from across the LoC landed near an army camp in Poonch town, triggering panic among people residing nearby,” the source said.

“One shell landed in a peripheral village of Poonch town,” the source said.

The explosions triggered panic in areas in Mandi and Loran blocks where people were bracing for voting in the second phase of ongoing panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir.

“The firing and shelling lasted for over four hours,” the source said.

An army soldier was reportedly injured in firing in Poonch area, but his condition is stated to be stable.

Meanwhile, a soldier of army’s Rashtriya Rifles posted on LoC in Lam Nowshera got injured when he was shot at by a Pakistani sniper, according to a source.

“The soldier was evacuated for treatment,” he said.

In Kalal area of Nowshera in Rajouri district, armies of India and Pakistan exchanged small as well as heavy arms, the source said.

“The firing started in the late morning hours and lasted for over three hours,” a resident of Sayal village of Nowshera told Greater Kashmir.
