With the availability of almost everything online, no longer do buyers have to struggle to find the product of their choice. Convenience and fewer expenses are the biggest perquisites offered by this booming industry. Carrying forward the legacy, two city youth Aamir Abbas, 28, and Mohsin Ali Gazi, 29, have launched an online supermarket in Srinagar by the name ‘Valley Basket’ to help people restock their grocery items from the comfort of their home.

“Valley Basket is the place from where you can purchase all your grocery products online through a reliable delivery service. This is a new concept here and will take time to establish its roots but we are confident that our idea will prove to be useful,” says Aamir.

Before entering the world of business both the founders had worked for different companies under various professions. With the aim to evolve purchasing habits of customers they have included groceries, personal care products, stationery and various other items on their online shopping portal at affordable prices. While Aamir has a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology from Maharshi Dayanand University, Faridabad, Mohsin is a graduate in Commerce from Islamia College.

Talking about the emerging market for e-commerce, Mohsin says,

“A lot of development has been taking place in the tech industry and we believe that it can make people’s lives much easier. The main reason behind coming up with this venture is that it will help people save time that they would otherwise spend on trying to get their groceries.”

This online supermarket allows people to buy their daily essentials on the website of Valley Basket or by directly contacting the owners and the requisite items will be delivered to them within 24 hours.

“For instance, you run out of some groceries and cannot go out to purchase them due to some reason. All you have to do is just log on to our website and place your order. It’s as simple as it sounds,” says Mohsin.

The duo has invested their own savings to set up this venture and when asked about their journey as entrepreneurs, Aamir said, “Starting a business is no cakewalk. The most challenging part right now for us is to build our customer base. Changing everyday routine of going to local market to procure basic necessities is the biggest obstacle to overcome but we have come up with a new concept where everything you require is available at your fingertips. This kind of service was never there in the market and very few people are interested in spending their money for this kind of startup. But it’s all about putting your efforts and making a difference.”

Valley Basket was officially launched by IT and Technical Education Minister Imran Raza Ansari who lauded the duo for coming up with this idea of an online supermarket in Kashmir Valley.

To keep their operations smooth the founders of Valley Basket hope that the frequent shutdown of internet in valley will not become a problem for them. After successfully coming up with a user friendly website they are focusing on ways and means of improving their marketing team, enhancing their delivering team to cover maximum parts and to meet new suppliers so that they have a wide variety of items to offer.

“It is very fulfilling to watch young people engaging in all sorts of business ventures and taking full advantage of the internet. This will definitely bring a change for everybody’s betterment,” says Mohsin.

E-Commerce is a thriving sector creating thousands of new job opportunities all around the country. Talking about its settlement in valley the duo says, “E-Commerce in Kashmir is still in its developing stages but due to easy availability of internet, it will spread at a great pace. This will obviously create job opportunities and hence have a good economic impact. We hope more people realize its relevance and dive into this sector.”

A Tryst of the Heart and History along the Karakoram Highway

Probably the only Kashmiri leader having roots, presence and following in all three divided regions of the Jammu & Kashmir state, he shunned personal grandeur – that many thought would accrue by burial in AJK and insisted on a Gilgit burial instead.
