A two-hour token strike was observed across peripheral health institutions of J&K on Wednesday against alleged misbehaviour by sub district magistrate (SDM) with a doctor in the CHC Zainapora earlier this week. The doctors, paramedics and supportive staff in peripheral health institutes across all district, sub district, primary and community health centres of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh suspended work for two hours against alleged unruly behaviour of the SDM Zainapora Shopian towards the doctor on duty, a DAK handout here said.

The strike called by Doctors Association Kashmir was supported by JKDCC, doctors association Jammu (DAJ),resident doctors association(RDA) Jammu ,society of consultant doctors (SCD), society of dental surgeons J&K (SDSJK ),Chenab valley doctors association, national health mission (NHM),technical employees association, all Ladakh doctors association &  private practitioners association, the statement said.

Terming the strike as the “last resort”, Dr Suhail Naik president DAK and Dr M Yousuf Tak convener Jammu Kashmir Doctors Coordination Committee (JKDCC) said, “Keeping the patient care and public suffering in mind, we just protested by wearing armbands earlier, but when no action was taken against the concerned SDM we were forced for this pen down strike today.”

Meanwhile, minister for Health and Medical Education Bali Bhagat, in a Facebook post, called the behaviour of the SDM towards the doctor “uncalled for” and assured that action would be taken against the accused official.

He said he had directed the chief secretary to take up the matter with Divisional Commissioner Kashmir. “This is for the information of all Valley doctors” he wrote in his post.

The doctors have threatened to intensify the strike if action not initiated against the official.
