The governing body of Sher-e-Kashmir institute of medical sciences on Friday ratified the government order appointing Dr Omar Javed Shah as the interim director of the institute as well as the attachment of Dr AG Ahangar with the general administration department.

The governing body met at Jammu this afternoon under the chairpersonship of chief minister Mehbooba Mufti and approved the orders, a day after the government ordered appointment of Dr Shah, a professor of gastroenterology, as interim head of the tertiary-care hospital.

The governing board also authorised her (Mehbooba) to order appropriate inquiry into the issues related to “lack of supervision and control by Prof A G Ahangar over the recent months”, an official statement said.

While ratifying the action taken against three faculty members for indulging in private practice, the meeting directed SKIMS to institute a full-fledged inquiry into the issue in terms of relevant rules, the statement said.

The governing body also decided to constitute a small management committee to be set up by SKIMS—which shall meet periodically—to monitor functioning of the institute and recommend measures required to improve its overall functioning.

“The SKIMS is a premier health institute of the state and no effort to either demean its reputation or compromise the quality of service to patients would be allowed,” the statement quoted Mehbooba as saying in the meeting.

While approving the government decision of relieving Prof Ahanger of his duties and directing him to report to the GAD, the meeting ratified the decision of entrusting Dr Shah with charge of the director till further orders.

It has been learnt that the allegations of private practice by doctors of the institute would also be looked into.

“Many issues have come to fore which need to be looked into,” an official said, refusing to divulge further details.

A source said that the issue of having full-fledged director to the institute also came up for discussion.

“It was decided that all formalities will be followed as per constitution of SKIMS in this regard. Both the chairperson and other members of the governing body were of the opinion that the issue must be addressed soon,” said the source.

Last week, the government had issued orders to attach Dr A G Ahangar with the general administration department, while three doctors of the institute were suspended for indulging in private practice despite drawing non-practising allowances (NPA).

Those who attended the meeting of the governing body included minister for health and medical education Bali Baghat; minister for finance Haseeb Drabu; minister of state for health & medical education, Asiea Naqash; chief secretary, BB Vyas; principal secretary to Chief Minister, Rohit Kansal; principal secretary, health and medical Education, Dr. Pawan Kotwal; Prof. Omar Javed Shah, director, SKIMS; principals of GMC Srinagar, Jammu and SKIMS medical college, Srinagar; Prof M S Khuroo, Prof. Khursheed Iqbal and Prof Altaf Ramzan (all members of the governing body).
