A complete shutdown was observed on Thursday in Awantipora township of Pulwama district against the power crisis in the area.

All shops and other business establishments remain closed in the town in protest against Power Development Department (PDD). 

The locals and shopkeepers staged protest on Srinagar-Jammu highway and complained against unscheduled and long power cuts.

Inhabitants of the area talking to Greater Kashmir said that both metered as well as non-metered areas are facing long and unscheduled power outages.

The residents threatened to stop payment of power tariff in case the supply did not improve.

When contacted, a senior PDD official said the department is repairing the 33KV line at Lassipora and Wanpoh due to which there are power crisis in many areas of south Kashmir. 

He also blamed consumers for resorting to misuse of electricity.
