The State Human Rights Commission has sought a report from J&K Police to explain why a French TV journalist, who was shooting his documentary on pellet victims here, was arrested.

On December 9, when the victims of human right abuse were holding a sit-in at Pratap Park, Paul Comiti was arrested by police.

Police has registered FIR vide number 87/2017 under section 14 (B) Passport Act and Paul is presently lodged at Police Station Kothibagh.

The Act, police said, envisages seizure of passport or travel document from any person against whom a reasonable suspicion exists that he has committed any offence punishable under section 12.

A petition in this regard was filed by rights activist Ahsan Untoo before the commission, the chairperson accepted the petition and issued notice to IGP and SSP to submit a report why the journalist was arrested.

The petitioner in the petition states, “I want to know why he was detained while discharging his professional duties. The SP East may kindly be directed to produce the said journalist before the commission so that he can clear his position.”

Paul is an award winning journalist.
