Authorities on Wednesday imposed restrictions in various parts of Srinagar city to prevent Muharram processions which remain banned in the areas since 1989.

Restrictions were imposed in areas falling under the jurisdiction of Shaheed Gunj, Batamaloo, Shergari, Kothibagh, Ram Munshi Bagh, Maisuma, and Kral Khud police stations, said an official.

He said the restrictions were imposed as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order.

An eye witness said that policemen have erected barricades in these areas.

The traditional Muharram procession used to pass through these areas, but have been banned since eruption of militancy in 1989.
