Independent legislator and Awani Ittehad Party (AIP) chairman Er Rasheed on Monday led a march in Handwara area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district to protest the killing of a woman in a gunfight in Younsu village.

A spokesman of the party said that hundreds joined the legislator in the protest march against the killing of the woman identified as Misra Bano in media reports.

Blaming army for her death, the protesters chanted slogans to seek arrest of the “army men and an end to state terrorism.”

Addressing the protesters at Main Chowk Handwara, Rasheed condemned the killings by calling them unacceptable.

He said the killing of the woman has “yet again proved that security forces are accountable to none and treat themselves above any law.”

“It seems that the price of Kashmiri lives has been fixed Rs. 1.00 Lac. And a traditional enquiry. New Delhi wants to threaten Kashmiris and shut their mouth,” he said, adding: “… but denying them justice will only strengthen the commitment of Kashmiris to fight for their genuine political rights.”

“It seems that for security forces killing every Kashmiri irrespective of age and gender is something they call serving the national interest. The intellectual class of India needs to understand its duties and must do whatsoever [is] required to make army and other security agencies accountable,” said Rasheed.

Police has claimed that the woman was killed in cross-fire. An official said that the woman sustained bullet injury while trying to escape from the house in which the militants were trapped.

Three militants were killed in the gunfight, said DGP SP Vaid.
