The High Court on Monday directed the government to file within a week status report with regard to its directions in a Public Interest Litigation seeking conservation of water bodies in Kashmir.

A division bench of Justice Muhammad Yaqoob Mir and Justice Ali Muhammad Magrey directed the government to file during the course of the current week the status report in the PIL titled Molvi Peer Noor ul Haq versus State.

The court issued the direction after senior additional advocate general B A Dar said he has prepared the report and will file it in registry. The court listed the matter for further consideration on December 22.

Meanwhile the court directed the government to file response to the plea by an NGO seeking directions for cancelling the Wular dredging contract that has been allotted to a Kolkata based company - M/S REACH Dredging Ltd.

In its application filed in High Court through advocate Shafaqat Nazir, the NGO has said that after 2014 floods the State government had deemed it appropriate to initiate the process of dredging in river Jehlum and gave the contract to M/S REACH Company.

Pointing out that the dredging of river Jhelum was not well conceived and was carried out on unscientific lines, the NGO submits that the M/S REACH Company should not be given the contract for dredging of Wular.
