Militants attacked a police picket guarding the former National Conference lawmaker at a village in south Kashmir's Shopian district early today.

A police official said that the militants fired upon the police picket set up in the premises of the residence of Showkat Ahmad Ganie at Chitragam village.

“The policemen returned the fire, forcing the militants to flee from the spot,” said the official.

Ganie told Greater Kashmir that the attack took place at around 4:30 am and was possibly a weapon snatching bid.

There was no report of any loss of life in the incident.
