A former militant has gone missing from Laderwan area in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Thursday afternoon.

He has been identified as Abdul Rashid Mir of Awoora area of Kupwara.

“Rashid was a militant in nineties. He returned from Pakistan through Nepal and was running a shop in his village,” said the younger brother of Rashid.

Rashid, brother said, left his home for Laderwan in the morning where he had to meet his in-laws. “He was there till afternoon. After lunch he told his in-laws that he will visit his sister’s home, leaving his cellphone back at the in-laws house,” he said. “He is since missing”.

Rashid’s mother urged people to help trace her son.

The incident has left locals shocked. They say Rashid had surrendered and was a part of mainstream politics. Kupwara Police has also sought help from general public in tracing Rashid.

“We have lodged a missing complaint in the Awoora police Chowki,” said Rashid’s brother.

“Five special search teams have been formed to find Rashid. We have also used drones in the nearby areas to search for him,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Kupwara Yasir Parray told Greater Kashmir.
