Experts Monday said that dredging downstream river Jhelum will go a long way towards flood control in Kashmir. They said that it would stop frequent rise of water levels in the river in Srinagar as it would increase speed of water flow.

The experts said that Jhelum has a mild slope, result in sediment getting deposited due to sluggish water flow.

“Jhelum has a bed slope of 1 in 8000 to 1 in 12000 in the reach from Verinag to its entrance point at Wullar Lake in the bowl snapped valley of Kashmir,” said Ajaz Rasool, a hydraulic expert.

He added that this slope is thus more or less horizontal and conducive to result in sediment getting deposited due to sluggish flow. “From Wullar outlet up to Khadanyar, the slope becomes steeper to 1 in 3500 and Jhelum in this reach is called the outflow channel (OFC). The velocity of flow in OFC is thus more compared to upstream,” he explained.

He said that thereafter the river goes in rapids in Uri with slope of 1 in160 and out flow velocity accordingly is much higher.

“This is the reason that the best location for dredging is outflow where we have enough area on either bank to hold dredged slurry,” he said. He said that dredging at OFC induces a draught which results in increase of velocity of flow and transports the deposited sediment of upstream reach and even of Wullar lake.

He informed that presently post flood 2014 more sediment has got deposited, so dredging of OFC needs to be augmented as also Wullar lake too is required to be selectively dredged to recover its 40 percent lost volumetric capacity in last three decades. “This will go a long way towards flood control measures required at earliest,” he said.

Admitting the facts, Imtiyaz Ahmad Dhar, Chief Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control Department, , said that the work is in progress to increase the capacity of Jhelum.
