With an eye on the forthcoming state and parliamentary elections, Bharatiya Janata Party state unit has pitched for naming a new district hospital in Ganderbal after a National Conference leader.

The saffron party’s state unit spokesman, Khalid Jehangir, who himself comes from the northern town, said the hospital should be named after the late NC leader, Sheikh Abdul Jabbar as a tribute to him.

"Sheikh Jabbar was a visionary leader and a prominent political figure of Ganderbal district who worked tirelessly for the welfare of the people and is still remembered for his contribution,” Jehangir told Greater Kashmir, adding he has written to the chief secretary to consider naming the upcoming hospital after Sheikh Jabbar.

Jabbar, who was assassinated by unknown gunmen in 1990, was an influential figure in Ganderbal area and a close confidant of the founder of NC, Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah.

His son, Sheikh Ishfaq who has been a legislator from Ganderbal agreed with the BJP spokesman’s recommendation.

"I welcome and second his views to name new hospital Ganderbal after my father late Sheikh Abdul Jabbar,” Ishfaq said, adding that as a legislator he had also recommended to name the district hospital at Ganderbal after his father.
