The arrest of at least five youths on Thursday night in Arwani village of Bijbehara triggered violent clashes in the area on Friday, forcing authorities to suspend train service on the Srinagar-Banihal route.

Local residents said the Special Operations Group of the police raided several houses in Arwani during the night and rounded up the youth.

“Though the locals came out of their homes to resist arrests the police fired tear shells to disperse them and bundled the youth into their vehicles,” said Bilal Ahmad, a local resident.

Early morning, the villagers again hit the streets and demanded release of the arrested youth. The government forces, however, fired tear smoke and pepper gas canisters and then empty rounds into air to disperse the protesters.

The protesters offered stiff resistance and threw stones at the forces and engaged them in fierce clashes that continued throughout the day, forcing authorities to suspend train service on the Srinagar-Qazigund-Banihal route.

“The service was suspended for security reasons,” a railway official said, adding train service from Srinagar to Baramulla operated as per the schedule.

A police officer said a few youths have been picked up for questioning in connection with the firing incident on May 15 and grenade attack on May 23.

On May 15, an SPO was killed and another constable was injured after militants attacked a police vehicle in Pazalpora area of Bijbehara.

On May 23, 10 persons suffered splinter injuries after some unknown persons lobbed a grenade on a forces vehicle which missed the target and exploded on the roadside at Goriwal locality of the town.
