With protests for justice to Kathua rape and murder victim showing no let up in this district, at least five students on Monday sustained injuries in the clashes in Anantnag town.

The students assembled at Lal Chowk area of town early morning and staged a protest. Few stones were thrown towards a paramilitary force vehicle, who in retaliation fired pellets injuring a student, witnesses said.

“The student had suffered multiple pellet injuries in his chest and hand,” a doctor at district hospital Anantnag told Greater Kashmir.

Soon the protests morphed into clashes with forces resorting to intense tear gas shelling.

The students of boys’ degree college Khanabal also protested inside the campus.

The students later threw stones on the police personnel deployed outside the college who in turn barged inside the campus and lobbed shells to disperse them.

At least four students sustained minor injuries in the clashes and were shifted to district hospital Anantnag.

“Eight policemen also suffered injuries after being hit by the stones,” a police official said.

Earlier, on Wednesday dozens of students including girls were injured during daylong clashes in the town following which classwork in all the schools and colleges in Anantnag and Bjbehara towns was suspended, only to be resumed today.

The students protests over the horrific gang rape-and-murder of a minor girl in Kathua are refusing to die down despite the government appealing to the students to return to their classes.

In Shopian district, army resorted to aerial firing to disperse youth at Pinjura after their vehicle came under heavy stone pelting, sources said.

The students of GDC Shopian also took to streets at court complex and protested against the suspension of classwork in the college.

Students said that they were worried about their future and asked the government to resume the classwork in the college.

Students later pelted the forces with stones who in return lobbed tear smoke shell.

In another incident, youth pelted a survey team of army with stones in Murran area of Pulwama.

Army's Rashtriya Rifles were doing some survey when youth in large numbers assembled at Muran Chowk and pelted army soldiers with stones.
