Two militants were killed in Sopore Tuesday during a fierce firefight with government forces, police said.

The gunfight started late Monday night when a joint team of Army’s 22 RR, Special Operations group of the state police and paramilitary CRPF launched an anti-militancy operation in Nowpora Tujjar area following intelligence about presence of suspected militants there.

As the government forces tightened their cordon of the area, hiding militants opened fire on soldiers sparking a fierce firefight, a police officer said.

A police statement identified one of the killed militants as Abdul Majeed Mir alias Sameer son of Bashir Ahmad Mir of Tujar-Sharief Bomai Sopore. It said identity of the second slain militant was still being ascertained.

The statement said both the militants were affiliated with Lashkar-e-Toiba.
