Two militants travelling in a vehicle were killed in a brief shootout at Kralhar area in northern Baramulla district on Friday afternoon, the police said.

Giving details about the incident, senior superintendent of police Baramulla Imtiyaz Hussain said that two militants travelling in a vehicle were asked to stop at Kralhar Baramulla—near railway station—at around 1.30 pm. But, he said, the militants fired from their weapon which was retaliated by a joint team of the police and other forces, resulting in the death of both the militants.

Briefing media at district police lines here, Hussain said the “driver of the vehicle who hails from Kanispora Baramulla suffered minor injury in the incident and has been taken into custody.”

The SSP identified the slain militants with their “code names” as Faizan and Wahab from Jaish-e-Muhammad outfit. “Both were Pakistani militants,” he said.

Deputy inspector general of Central Reserve Police Force Rajesh Kumar Yadav, who was part of the press briefing, said there were some women also in the vehicle at the time of incident, “but they escaped.”

This is the second shootout on the Srinagar-Baramulla highway in the past two days. On Wednesday, two militants travelling in a vehicle lobbed a grenade at a naka party at Babateng Pattan, resulting in injuries to three policemen including deputy superintendent of police (operations). One of these two militants, according to the police, was arrested during a chase but another escaped and was killed in a shootout at Kakpora area in southern Pulwama district.
