With one more person confirmed positive for the vector-borne dengue fever here at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H) Jammu on Wednesday, the total registered positive cases in the region have escalated to 71 so far, source said.

Meanwhile, 818 people complaining of fever with dengue like symptoms have been undergoing treatment either at the medical college, its associated hospitals or other hospitals of the region while waiting for the reports.

As per figures available with Greater Kashmir, the viral disease spread fast in between the month of September and October as there were only 14 cases tested positive in the month of September which escalated to 71 till October 17.  The first positive case was reported in the month of May.   

As per official figures provided by Director Health Services Jammu (DHSJ), there were 366 suspected cases of dengue in Jammu region in the month of September and the number rose to 818 till October 17, an addition of 452 cases in less than a month time period.

Pertinently, four people died of the disease in the year 2013, and one in the year 2016. 

In the same year (2013), highest 5880 suspected cases of dengue were reported and 1838 confirmed positive.

In the year 2014, 184 suspected cases were reported with only one person confirmed positive while in the year 2015, 984 suspected cases were reported with 153 tested positive.

In the year 2016, 984 suspected cases were reported and 79 tested positive for the vector-borne disease with one death. In the next year i.e. 2017, 2979 suspected cases were reported and 488 tested positive. 

When contacted, epidemiologist Dr J P Singh said, “A health advisory issued by the state as well as Centre has been published widely in local dailies to create awareness about the disease.”

“School going children, senior citizens and people need to take precautions to save themselves from mosquito bites after the beginning Monsoon season up to November month,” he said.
