Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singhon Monday left the Legislative Assembly in a huff after Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti’s brother and tourism minister Tassaduq Mufti conceded to the opposition demand that the bill relating to management of shrines should be referred to a select committee.

Visibly upset, Singh stormed out of the House after Tassaduq sent the bill to the select committee.

The bill was meant to facilitate MLA Billawar to become member of a board looking after management of two Hindu shrines.

Singh is MLA Billawar himself.

Before leaving the House, Singh expressed his displeasure over Tassaduq’s act to minister for Parliamentary Affairs Abdur Rehman Veeri.

He  did not return to the House and stayed away during remaining proceedings to  protest over Tassaduq’s act.

When “The Jammu and Kashmir Shri Mata Sukharala Devi Ji Shrine and Shri Mata Bala Sundari Shrine (Ammendment) bill 2018” was tabled in the House, NC’s Devinder Singh Rana opposed its provision that allowed appointment  of local MLA as member of the Board.

“Today he (Nirmal Singh) is the MLA. He may be MLA again and thereafter there may be somebody else who may be MLA,” he said, adding that boards should be kept out of politics.

“My humble suggestion to the House and government is that let us not bring politics into Boards.  As and when the boards have been isolated from politics, they have done very well and served public, “he said.

He said this would create a precedent and open gate for MP Udhampur and MLA Reasi to become members of Mata Vaishno Devi Board.

“We should not create a precedent that would allow politicians to become members of these boards,” he said.

Other opposition MLAs also support Rana’s views, saying “we should keep shrine boards insulated from politics.”
