BahujanSamaj Party (BSP) on Thursday announced poll boycott for upcoming civic body elections in the state.

Citing the prevailing security situation as the prime reason, BSP appealed to the Governor to rethink the idea of conducting polls, the process for which has already been initiated.

“Kashmir is already gone out of hand as security forces have failed to control the situation. Militants barge into Jammu anytime, as we saw in the recent JhajjarKotli incident. The present deteriorating security scenario in the state is not conducive for any electoral process,” said state president BSP Som Raj Majotra.

He further said, “Public sentiment is also not in favor of elections. The central government and Jammu and Kashmir Governor are trying to force polls on the people, which is not right for a healthy democracy,” adding, “Keeping in view the turmoil and sentiments of the public, BSP decided not to participate in the local elections.”

The state president further claimed, “The government failed to provide security cover to party leaders, who have to campaign throughout the state. There is no plan to ensure security to the contesting candidates and in these circumstances, we do not want to endanger our leaders and workers.”

However, Majotra said, “If any BSP leader feels that he should to contest polls, he or she is advised to participate as an independent candidate.”

Pertinently, earlier, two Kashmir based major regional parties, National Conference (NC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), decided not to participate in the polls, citing Article 35-A case as the reason.
