The government on Friday informed the assembly that at least 726 persons were detained under the controversial Public Safety Act in the past two years.

In a written reply to a question raised by MLA Mubarak Gul, the chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, who also holds the home department portfolio, has said that 525 and 201 persons were detained under the PSA, which allows detention without a trial, in 2016 and 2017 respectively.

“124 out of 201 persons detained in 2017 were released and 77 are still under preventive detention,” the chief minister’ reply reads, adding that all the persons detained under PSA in 2016 were released.

However, the government hasn’t disclose the particulars of the detainees keeping in view their security and the security of their families, the reply reads, adding that the government has already announced amnesty to the first-time stone-pelters.

Meanwhile, the chief minister has further said that at least 349 cases of domestic violence were registered in 2017, and 348 in 2106.
