A political activist was killed while his two police guards were injured in a suspected militant attack at Rajpora in south Kashmir's Pulwama district on Wednesday.

An official said that gunmen fired at the vehicle of Ghulam Nabi Patel at Rajpora chowk, leaving him and his two PSOs - Imtiyaz Ahmad Zargar and Bilal Ahmad Lone - injured.

Patil, a resident of Dangerpora Shadimarg, later succumbed to injuries on the way to a hospital.

Reports had earlier suggested that Patel was associated with the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). But a party source said that he was no longer associated with them.

In separate statements, both the Congress and PDP have condemned the killing of Patel, but neither of the two parties have owned the slain activist.

A police spokesman, in a statement, said that the militants fired upon a vehicle at Rajpura chowk  in which Ghulam Nabi Patel resident of Dangerpora Shadimarg and two policemen got injured.

Gh Nabi Patel succumbed to his injuries in the fatal attack, he said.

The two PSOs who sustained bullet injuries were shifted to hospital and their medical bulletin is awaited.

In this regard, a case has been registered and investigations taken up, said the spokesman.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti has condemned the killing.

In a statement, a spokesman said the CM condemned the killing of a "local Congress activist of Pulwama, Ghulam Nabi Patel who was killed  this afternoon at Rajpora chowk by unknown assailants."

The Chief Minister has expressed sympathies with the bereaved family and prayed for peace to the departed soul, he said.
