An army spokesperson confirmed that an army soldier and a militant were killed in the firefight that erupted today morning in Nowbug Kund village of Devsar after government forces launched a cordon-and-search operation in the area.

“As the forces approached the suspected spot, the hiding militants opened fire, which was retaliated,” said an official.

He said the militants managed to slip away after exchanging fire. “However, contact was established again with the militants and a gunfight ensued that lasted for several hours,” he said.

In the gunfight, a militant of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen identified as Muzamil Mansoor was killed. A soldier was killed and another soldiers and a policeman were injured in the firefight.

Mansoor, a resident of Badroo Yaripora, was an engineering graduate. He had been active since past over three years.

“Firing has stopped. However, a search operation is on,” said the official.

Authorities suspended Internet services in south Kashmir areas and ordered the suspension of train service for the day after the gunfight started.
