Authorities on Tuesday carried an anti-encroachment drive outside historic Jamia Masjid in Downtown here.

During the anti-encroachment drive, special teams of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) faced resentment from encroachers. During the scuffle between officials and encroachers, several SMC officials were injured.

“Despite stiff resistance, we succeeded in dismantling illegal structures,” said an official who wished not to be named.

Officials said the teams were set up today to remove illegal structures which had come up around the Jamia Masjid.

The development follow a day after the Anjuman-e-Auqaf, the managing body of historic Jamia Masjid at Nowhatta accused the ruling dispensation of turning a “blind eye” towards beautification of Jamia Masjid and “failing to act against those who have raised illegal constructions outside Jamia Masjid thereby blocking the view of the mosque.”

The SMC ‘s special sanitation teams equipped with machinery were today pressed into service at Jamia Masjid. The teams restored blocked drainage. A separate team of SMC also conducted check-up of street lights and replaced the defunct lights with new ones.

Officials said 12 dust bins were installed on the spots identified by Auqaf Anjuman Jamia Masjid.

Expressing satisfaction over today’s development, general secretary Anjuman-e-Auqaf, the managing body of historic Jamia Masjid, Haji Altaf said that “authorities should remove street vendors outside the Jamia Masjid.’

“We are managing the affairs inside Jamia Masjid with the money donated by people. We want that in Jamia Masjid peripheries, authorities should ensure sanitation, remove encroachments, regulate traffic and provide other civic facilities,” he added.

SMC commissioner Riyaz Ahmad Wani said that special teams have been set up for conducting anti-encroachment and sanitation drives.

“We will ensure to meet all genuine demands,” he added.
