The J&K government is mulling to emulate the practices adopted by Delhi government in schools to reduce the weight of school bags carried by children in the state.

The development comes at a time when the state government has failed to implement the recommendations of the expert committee that had called for reducing the weight of schoolbags.

The government has decided to depute an official team of director rank which will visit the government-run schools in New Delhi.

“The team will interact with the officials there in the education department and compile a report which will be implemented here by the government to reduce the weight of school bags,” said an official privy to the development.

The decision was taken after the four-member committee submitted its report to the government with recommendations to reduce the weight of school bags. “As the government was analyzing the committee report, it was decided to imitate some practices adopted by New Delhi government who has already succeeded in reducing the weight of bags carried by school going children,” the official said.

Director school education Kashmir (DSEK), G N Itoo, while confirming the development, said the administrative department had decided to depute a team comprising of director Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), director Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) and other officials to Delhi and review the implementation of new practices adopted by New Delhi government in schools. “But the visit was deferred due to the recently concluded budget session,” said Itoo. “But now the team will leave for Delhi in shortest possible time.”

He said Delhi government from the past few years has adopted some “best practices” at elementary and middle-level classes in government schools. “The official team will submit their report which will be assessed and implemented here to reduce the weight of schoolbags,” said Itoo. “We are trying our best to reduce the burden of school going children.”

The committee constituted by J&K government had already submitted its report in October last year, with recommendations to reduce the weight in school bags. “The recommendations have been accepted by the department but in their report the committee had suggested to adopt best practices of other states as well,” said Itoo. “So the visit to Delhi schools will substantiate the report of our own expert committee.”
