National Conference president Farooq Abdullah and vice president Omar Abdullah Sunday termed as “highly unfortunate” the killing of civilians near a gunfight site in LarooKulgam and called for immediate end to such killings.

In a statement, Farooq said: “It is heartrending to learn about such incidents which have become norm. The situation calls for immediate de-escalation from all sides.”

Expressing heartfelt condolences with the bereaved families, Farooq prayed for peace to the departed souls.

Omar took to twitter about the Kulgam killings and wrote: “How long can the ground realities be ignored and living in denial of bad situation in Kashmir. Terrible news coming out from Kulgam. May the deceased find place in Jannat. Alienating the people in the fight against militancy is a sure fire recipe for losing the fight. How long can we go on ignoring the ground realities and living in denial about how bad things are in Kashmir?”

Later, in a statement, Omar expressed anguish over the killings and said “little good can our words do to those who lost their loved ones. I pray for peace to the souls of those who lost their lives and a speedy recovery for all the injured. I pray to Almighty to give courage to the families of victims to bear the loss.”

He said six civilian casualties in Kulgam “don’t augment well for peace to return to our state.”

“A whole new generation is growing in conflict and what needs to be done is to start a time-bound and result-oriented dialogue process,” Omar said.

According to the NC statement, the party’s general secretary Ali Muhammad Sagar, provincial president Nasir AslamWani, state secretaries SakinaItoo, G A Shah, south zone president Bashir Veeri, district president Kulgam Abdul MajeedBhat, district president AnantnagAltafKaloo, vice provincial president Syed Shafi, provincial spokesperson and in-charge Kulgam Imran Nabi Dar also condemned the killing of civilians and prayed for peace to departed souls.

“The leaders demanded a high-level probe to ascertain the details of civilian killings and sought exemplary punishment to those found guilty,” the statement read.
