GK impact: Work on road connecting 16 villages taken up after 10 years

The authorities have resumed work on Beeru-Basti to Duggli road, which was abandoned nearly 10 years back. The road connects around 16 villages of Bhaderwah with a population of over 10,000.

Pertinently, Greater Kashmir, in its June 9th edition, had carried a story highlighting the plight of the people of 4 panchayats due to lack of road connectivity.

The work on Beeru-Basti to Duggli road under PMGSY, connecting 4 panchayats of Kellar area of Bhaderwah, was abandoned nearly 10 years back due to which the resentment among the people had been growing.

The affected people also announced to boycott the Parliamentary elections giving slogan “no road no vote”.

Beeru-Basti to Duggli road, which was supposed to connect at least 10000 souls of 16 villages including Khelleni, Batoli, Bada, Goda, Lehrote, Southa, Danda, Shirinda, Gidi, Shamprota, Nalla, Drafda, Dalli, Gali, Dugli and Chilly of 4 Panchayats - Southa, Khelleni, Drafda and Duggli was undertaken under PMGSY in 2004.

The work was targeted to be completed in 18 months but even after 14 years, it remains incomplete.

Fed-up with the false promises of political representatives, administration and PMGSY authorities, during last one decade, prominent people of all the four panchayats unanimously decided that if the government doesn’t  sanction funds for the construction and macadamisation road, they will boycott the 2019 General Election with the slogan 'No Road No Vote'.

After Greater Kashmir carried the news and highlighted the issue in it's June 9 edition, the PMGSY authorities swung into action and issued ultimatum to the contractor and its officials at Doda Division to initiate the work without any further delay.

Acting promptly, AEE PMGSY Doda, Atta Mohd Sheikh summoned the contractor and along with AEs and JEs inspected the site and asked them to start the work immediately by deploying extra men and machinery.

“After media highlighted the issue, higher-ups directed us to complete the work on priority. There was an issue with the contractor, as there is no stone query nearby required for soling and metalling due to which the contractor was apprehensive of losses and abandoned the work,” said Atta Mohd Sheikh, AEE PMGSY Division Doda.

“Now, we have sorted out the issue and the work is going on in full swing and we are hopeful to blacktop the major portion of the 10 Km long road by November end,” AEE added.

Meanwhile, the people thanked Greater Kashmir for highlighting their plight.

“After exhausting all the resources, we lost hope. We contacted GK which highlighted our problem and finally the work on the road has been started,” said an elderly villager, Dev Raj of Bhada village in Southa Panchayat.

"We are grateful to Greater Kashmir, which projected our issue pending since a decade,” said another villager Jaan Mohd, a retired teacher of Panchayat Duggli.

PMGSY Doda recently started 2nd phase of work which includes soiling, metaling and macadamization.
