Residents of Zaffron Colony on city outskirts here have expressed resentment over lack of public transport services in the locality.

Locals said they have to walk three kilometers to board vehicles on the Srinagar-Jammu highway near Sempora to reach to their respective destinations.

“We have been moving from pillar to post since past five years. There is hardly any office left where we have not visited so far, but our demands met with deaf ears,” said Haji Abdul Gaffar Rather, an elderly resident of the area.

He said the Mohalla committee members have been demanding public transport since past five years. “But no government has shown serious approach towards our demands. We even went to Regional Transport officers but nothing happened,” he said.

Rather said that earlier in mid 90’s, a couple of SRTC buses would ply on the road, “but they were taken off the roads.”

“Since then lot of population from city have shifted to Zaffran Colony and there is a dire need of public transport. Not just the transport, we desperately need an ATM of any Banks, preferably, Jammu and Kashmir Bank. We have to travel to either Pampore or Pantha Chowk to withdraw money. We request the chairman J&K Bank to intervene and address the genuine issue on priority,” said another resident, Muzamil Ahmed.

Local MLA Muhammad Ashraf Mir, also endorsed the demands put forth by the locals. “I will pursue both the issues on priority,” he said.
