The residents of Baramulla town on Thursday staged a protest demonstration against alleged discrimination with the town on development front and attempt to shift the proposed Passport Seva Kendra from the town.

Organised under the newly floated Baramulla Joint Coordination Committee (BJCC), comprising of traders association, Bar association and several other organisations, local residents on Friday gathered at main chowk Baramulla where they raised their voice against the alleged discrimination with the town.

While addressing the gathering, the general secretary Traders Federation Baramulla said the town has witnessed discrimination for last several decades with the result this historic town has been left far-behind as compared to even newly created districts.

He said that the old hospital building which is spread over around 37 kanals of land and located in the heart of the town has been left deserted ever since hospital was shifted to new location.

“We were assured that the old hospital building will be used for some section of the hospital so that the importance of this old hospital building which is located in the heart of the town is not undermined,” said Tariq Ahmad Mughloo, secretary traders federation Baramulla.

He said that the town residents have been struggling for car parking lot and despite repeated assurance from the administration nothing has been done so far.

The gathering was also addressed by the members of Bar association Baramulla which include Advocate Abdul Salam and Advocate Hilal Ahmad.

While speaking over the recent issue of shifting of proposed Passport Seva Kendra, the Bar members said that any attempt to fiddle with the interests of the town will be dealt with strong opposition.

“The historical importance of the Baramulla town has been eroded with the passage of time. However, the locals irrespective of their ideological differences will unitedly fight against any such attempt aimed to deprive town of prosperity and development,” said members of the Bar association Baramulla.

Advocate Abdul Salam Rather while lashing out at the district administration said that it is unfortunate that the deputy commissioner Baramulla has no idea of establishing of Passport Seva Kendra at Baramulla.

“When we had meeting with the deputy commissioner Baramulla about the Kendra, he had no idea of such development. It reflects how Baramulla administration is ‘well versed’ with the town development,” said Rather.

Advocate Hilal Ahmad while castigating state Government over ‘step motherly’ treatment to Baramulla town said that ‘the residents of the town will not shy away from snatching their rights if authorities didn’t adhere to unanimous development for all districts’.
