Authorities gear up for civic body polls in Jammu

He said process of filing of nominations for the municipal wards will start from September 18.

The Jammu region geared up for civic body polls after State Election Commission announced first phase of voting from October 8.

"The election for 75 wards of Jammu Municipal   Corporation and 79 wards of municipal committees would be held on October 8," said deputy commissioner, Jammu Ramesh Kumar, who is also district election officer. 

He said process of filing of nominations for the municipal wards will start from September 18.

The last date of filing nominations has been scheduled till September 25, while scrutiny of the nominations would be held on September 26.

The candidature can be withdrawn till September 28, while the polling is scheduled for October 8 from 7.00 am to 2.00 pm.

“50 returning officers (RO) appointed,” he added.

He said election would be held on party basis and for the first time electronic voting machines would be used for these polls.

These are total 554 polling stations in the region.

He said security arrangements have been finalized, while process of identifying sensitive and hyper sensitive polling booths is going on, which will be completed within two days.

On violations of Model Code of Conduct (MCC), he said: “sub-divisional magistrate and tehsildar have been authorized to ensure that candidates and political partiesdonot violate it”.

He informed that a candidate of Municipal Corporation is allowed to spend 1.55 lakh, while for Municipal Council and Municipal Committee candidate can spend 1 lakh and 50 thousand respectively.

He said around around 4 lakh voters have been registered for the upcoming local body elections.
